    AIARE 1 Hybrid Avalanche Education

Alpenglow's AIARE 1 Hybrid Course is a comprehensive, entry-level avalanche education course in North Lake Tahoe designed for those with basic ski/snowboard touring experience. It will be 2-days of in-person learning, both in a classroom and in the field. The online portion of this course consists of approximately 8 hours of coursework that can be completed on your own time. Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).

The AIARE 1 is for snowboarders and skiers who want to recreate in or near avalanche terrain. Participants may have attended some awareness classes or workshops or completed the Avalanche Rescue course, but none are a prerequisite for this course. There are no other prerequisites, although, if you have less than 5 days of backcountry experience, you need to join Alpenglow's Backcountry 1.0 course first. Aspiring professionals will need to take the AIARE 1 and Avalanche Rescue as a prerequisite for the Pro 1 course.

At the end of the AIARE 1 course, the student should be able to: develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain, demonstrate the ability to identify avalanche terrain, effectively use The AIARE Risk Management Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting, demonstrate effective companion rescue. This course is also available in South Lake Tahoe.
