What is Via Ferrata?
A Via Ferrata, which means “Iron Road” in Italian, is a protected hiking and climbing experience, scaling the iconic rock face that towers above The Village at Palisades Tahoe. Using permanent steel anchors and cables, participants are safely attached to the rock throughout the entire experience as well as guided by professional mountain guides.

Where is Palisades Tahoe’s Via Ferrata located?
The Lake Tahoe Via Ferrata is located in Olympic Valley, California, at Palisades Tahoe Resort. The experience will start and end at Alpenglow Expeditions in The Village at Palisades Tahoe. Both Via Ferrata routes ascend what is known as “Tram Face” which towers directly above the base area of the resort.

Who guides the Via Ferrata?
All groups are guided by Alpenglow Expeditions’ staff of AMGA trained Single Pitch Rock Instructors. Groups have a six-participants-per-one-guide ratio. All participants must be guided. The Via Ferrata is not open to the public.

How long does the Via Ferrata take?
Alpenglow Expeditions offers 2, 3, and 4 hour tours for both group and private experiences. Tours depart in the morning and afternoon 7 days a week.

Who can participate?
Via Ferrata requires no prior experience. Participants must be 10 years old, weigh 88lbs, and be 3'11". Special arrangements can be made if participants do not meet all requirements.

What equipment do I need?
Participants are encouraged to wear clothes similar to what you would wear hiking and bring a small backpack for water, snacks, sunscreen and any other items you may want to bring (i.e. camera). Closed toed shoes are required, and hiking shoes with sticky rubber are recommended (available for rental from Alpenglow Expeditions). All technical equipment (harness, helmet, gloves, and lanyards) are provided by Alpenglow at no additional cost.

What happens if I fall?
Via Ferrata connects participants to the rock 100% of the time through a specifically designed lanyard. These lanyards, which attach to the steel cable, will arrest the fall.

Is Via Ferrata impacted by weather?
Weather events such as lightning and thunder, rain or snow may cause closures or delays on the routes.

Can I bring a large group?
Yes, groups of up to 60 people can be accommodated at one time.
